                The Problem
It is estimated that approximately 20% of the population is neurodiverse, meaning 1 in 5 students require additional support for conditions like dyslexia, ADHD, or autism. Traditional classrooms are often not designed with these students in mind, leading to significant challenges in their educational experiences.

                Unemployment Rates

Neurodivergent adults face unemployment rates 8 times higher than their neurotypical peers, with 85% of adults with autism being unemployed versus 4% of the overall population.

                School Difficulties

85% of autistic students face school difficulties, underscoring the need for supportive learning environments for all students.

                Workplace Diversity

Increasing workplace diversity can boost a company’s bottom line by 19%, and teams with neurodivergent members can be 30% more productive than those without.

What SMART is doing about this
SMART Technologies is proud to support a project with the University of Melbourne, co-designed by neurodivergent researchers. This project ensures that the voices of neurodivergent individuals are at the forefront of the research, promoting dignity and amplifying their experiences.

                Inclusive Research Team:
The project was co-designed with neurodivergent teachers and speech pathologists, ensuring authenticity and relevance.

                Child-Centered Research:
The upcoming field study will prioritize the perspectives of neurodivergent children, understanding how they view their learning and how technology can help them fully participate in their school community.

                Why This Research Matters:
There is evidence that ICTs can increase engagement and facilitate improved educational outcomes for neurodivergent students when designed and integrated through Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. However, this potential is not being fully realized due to a lack of design initiative and universal implementation.
What this report aims to achieve
A Better Understanding of Neurodivergent Students' Needs

This research will help prepare neurodivergent students for success not only in the classroom but also in the workplace. By creating more inclusive learning environments, we can ensure that all students, regardless of their neurological differences, can thrive.

How Do We Improve Our Classroom Model?

Our study with the University of Melbourne aims to shift the focus from teacher perceptions to student experiences. By evaluating how neurodivergent students rate the impact of EdTech tools, we can develop educational solutions that truly support their needs.

Educators and School Leaders: Interest in Engagement Through Digital Tools

Digital tools are increasingly viewed as a way to engage neurodivergent students. Educators and school leaders are seeking effective technologies to support their students' needs, but the mere provision of technology is not enough. Technology must be integrated inclusively and effectively to ensure it benefits all students.
